Topics are a very robust attribute type that allow you to categorize objects in complex taxonomical relationships. These allow you to group objects in a stuctured way, such as showing all the entries in a parent category, etc. You can also apply permissions to each category / topic, and create multiple topic trees if you want to have multiple node systems to choose from.
